At the peak of the dry season, I noticed a pack of wild dogs had started to frequent one of the waterholes in Savute, Botswana each evening after dark so I arrived there early one morning before sunrise in the hope they would come to drink before their morning hunt. When the pack arrived there was a lone hyena at the pan and the four wild dogs immediately set out to harass it, chasing and tormenting it. Shooting the fast action in poor light, with numerous obstacles proved challenging but I managed to capture this shot where the hyena's expression perfectly encapsulated the scene I had witnessed. Despite occasionally turning to face its aggressors, it was a battle the hyena had no chance of winning and eventually it retreated, defeated, to the nearby woodland.
