Having been dry for 30 years, Botswana's Savute Channel only flowed for 5 years before drying once again and in-so-doing trapping a clutch of leviathan catfish in the last muddy pool that remained. I waited for several days for one of the local leopards who were known to eat fish to take advantage and was eventually rewarded when this female arrived, killing 10 colossal catfish in just one day. One of these she hauled up the river bank. Realising she was probably taking it to her young cub hiding a kilometre away, I moved on ahead of her and waited for her to approach me with the giant fish clasped in her jaws. The dried grass on the catfish was an indication of its massive weight as the leopard had to stop several times and rest the fish on the ground before she eventually and cermoniously gave her giant catch to her cub.
